1. Die Verwendung von , und

Die Modalverben must, must not und need not sind in allen Personen gleich. Es wird auch bei he/she/it keine Endung angehängt.

Achtung!

Wenn du sagen möchtest, dass du etwas nicht tun musst, dann verwende need not, nicht must not. (Möchtest du must verneinen, dann verwende not allowed to.)

I must play football. = I have to play football. *

I need not play football. = I do not need to play football. =
I do not have to play football.

I must not play football. = I am not allowed to play football.

Da man must nur im Simple Present benutzt, benötigt man für die anderen Zeitformen die Ersatzform have to. Diese Ersatzform have to ist nicht in allen Personen gleich, sondern ändert sich, wie die nachfolgende Tabelle zeigt.

Die Ersatzform have to ist im Simple Present nicht immer mit must austauschbar, es gibt dabei etwas zu beachten.

Das Modalverb must wird benutzt, wenn die Verpflichtung vom Sprecher selbst ausgeht.

Die Ersatzform have to wird benutzt, wenn die Verpflichtung von außen kommt, z.B. Fahrplan, Wetter oder Verwaltungen.

  (Wegen eines Schneesturms muss der Pilot in Vancouver landen.

  )
