1.1. Công thức thì quá khứ đơn

Trong đó:

S = I/ He/ She/ It + was

S= We/ You/ They + were

Ví dụ:

I was at my friend’s house yesterday morning.

(Tôi đã ở nhà bạn tôi sáng hôm qua.)

• S + V-ed

Ví dụ:

We studied English last night.

(Tối qua chúng tôi đã học tiếng Anh.)

Phủ định (-)

• S + was/were not + ……

Trong đó:

was not = wasn’t

were not = weren’t

Ví dụ:

We weren’t at home yesterday.

(Hôm qua chúng tôi không ở nhà.)

• S + did not + V (nguyên thể)

Trong thì quá khứ đơn câu phủ định ta mượn trợ động từ “did + not” (viết tắt là “didn’t), động từ theo sau ở dạng nguyên thể.)

Ví dụ:

He didn’t come to school last week.

(Tuần trước cậu ta không đến trường.)

Nghi vấn (?)
Was/Were+ S + V(nguyên thể)?

Ví dụ:

Was she tired of yesterday? (Cô ấy có bị mệt ngày hôm qua không?)

-> Yes, she was. (Có, cô ấy có.)

• Did + S + V(nguyên thể)?

Ví dụ:

Did you visit Ho Chi Minh Museum with your class last weekend? (Bạn có đi thăm bảo tàng Hồ Chí Minh với lớp của bạn cuối tuần trước hay không?)

-> Yes, I did. (Có, mình có)

1.2. Cách sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn

• Diễn tả một hành động, sự việc đã diễn ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể, hoặc một khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ và đã kết thúc hoàn toàn ở quá khứ.

VD: My sister came home late last night. (Chị gái tôi về nhà muộn đêm qua.)

• Diễn tả một hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ. 

VD: They always enjoyed going to the zoo. (Họ đã luôn luôn thích thú khi đi thăm vườn bách thú.)

• Diễn đạt các hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ.

VD: Anna came home, took a nap, then had lunch. (Laura về nhà, ngủ một giấc, rồi ăn trưa.)

• Diễn đạt một hành động xen vào một hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ.

VD: When Jane was cooking breakfast, the lights suddenly went out. (Khi Jane đang nấu bữa sáng thì đột nhiên đèn tắt.)

• Diễn đạt hành động không có thật ở hiện tại trong câu điều kiện loại II.

VD: If you were me, you would do it. (Nếu bạn là tôi, bạn sẽ làm thế.)

• Dùng trong câu ước không có thật

I wish I were in America now. (Tôi ước gì bây giờ tôi ở Mỹ)

→ việc “ở Mỹ” là không có thật trong hiện tại.

• Dùng trong một số cấu trúc: It’s + (high) time + S + Ved It + is + khoảng thời gian + since + thì quá khứ

Ví dụ: It is high time we started to learn English seriously. (Đã đến lúc chúng ta phải bắt đầu học tiếng Anh nghiêm túc)

• Câu hỏi có thể ở hiện tại hoàn thành những câu trả lời ở quá khứ

Ví dụ: 

Nếu người đưa thư thường đến khoảng giữa 9 giờ và 10 giờ, thì từ 9 giờ đến 10 giờ chúng ta sẽ nói:
→ Has the postman come yet/this morning?

(Sáng nay người đưa thư đã đến chưa?)

Nhưng sau giai đoạn từ 9 giờ đến 10 giờ thì chúng ta sẽ nói:

→ Did the postman come this morning?

(Sáng nay, người đưa thư đã đến rồi chứ?)

• Dùng để miêu tả một sự kiện lịch sử.

Ví dụ:

The Chinese invented printing. (Người Trung Quốc đã phát minh ra máy in)

• Khi hành động xảy ra một cách rõ ràng ở một thời điểm nhất định ngay cả khi thời điểm này không được đề cập đến.

Ví dụ: The train was ten minutes late. (Xe lửa đã trễ mươi phút)

1.3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn

Để nhận ra động từ cần chia ở thì quá khứ đơn, bạn nên chú ý những từ sau có trong câu:

• Yesterday: Hôm qua

• Last night: Tối qua

• Last week: Tuần trước

• Last month: Tháng trước

• Last year: Năm ngoái

• Ago: Cách đây

• at, on, in… + thời gian trong quá khứ

• When + mệnh đề chia thì quá khứ đơn
